Gout and hyperuricaemia in rural and urban populations.

چکیده
Estimates of the prevalence of gout in different countries vary widely, but previously reported studies have related to selected groups, such as patients attending a hospital clinic, and no reliable information is available of the prevalence of the disease in the general population. Many wellauthenticated reports have shown that the incidence of asymptomatic hyperuricaemia is in the region of 25 per cent. in the blood relatives of patients with gout (Talbott, 1940; Smyth, 1957; Stecher, Hersh, and Solomon, 1949). These studies have been interpreted as showing that hyperuricaemia is due to the inheritance of a single autosomal dominant gene with higher penetrance in the male than the female, although Hauge and Harvald (1955) suggested that more than one gene might be concerned. The familial nature of gout has been recognized since antiquity and is not in doubt, but whether familial hyperuricaemia is necessarily always associated with an increased incidence of clinical gout is not clear. Data bearing on this question, which have been obtained during surveys carried out by the Field Unit of the Empire Rheumatism Council under the direction of Dr. J. S. Lawrence,

Can genetics aggravate the health of isolated and remote populations? The case of gout, hyperuricaemia and osteoarthritis in Dalmatia.
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to investigate whether genetics may be considered an additional risk factor for health in isolated and remote populations, compared with their populations of origin. In this study, two remote island population samples from Croatia (from the islands of Vis and the Korcula) were compared with mainland controls from the coastal city of Split. The analyses foc...
متن کاملHyperthyroid and Hypothyroid Status Was Strongly Associated with Gout and Weakly Associated with Hyperuricaemia
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to estimate the risk of hyperuricaemia and gout in people with hypothyroid or hyperthyroid status. METHODS This study analyzed data from individuals who participated in health screening programs at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in northern Taiwan (2000-2010). Participants were categorized as having euthyroid, hypothyroid, or hyperthyroid status according to...
متن کاملThe genetics of gout: towards personalised medicine?
Over the last decade, there have been major advances in the understanding of the genetic basis of hyperuricaemia and gout as well as of the pharmacogenetics of urate-lowering therapy. Key findings include the reporting of 28 urate-associated loci, the discovery that ABCG2 plays a central role on extra-renal uric acid excretion, the identification of genes associated with development of gout in ...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of hyperuricaemia on serum chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (CCL2) levels and blood monocytes in people with gout. METHODS Whole blood was collected from subjects with a history of acute or chronic gout but not currently experiencing an attack of gout, subjects with asymptomatic hyperuricaemia and healthy individuals with normouricaemia. Serum concentrations ...
